School - Based Induction Programmes

We recommend that all schools have an effective induction programme for new governors. Some examples of good practice:

National Training Programme for New Governors and Clerks

If you are a new governor or clerk you may not be aware of this national programme. Its aim is to ensure that all governors have access to consistent information about their role, their responsibilities and the expectations of them, as well as the way in which the governing body works with the headteacher. The training is built around the three roles that governors play in helping schools to raise standards of teaching and learning. A DCSF Certificate of Training is awarded to those that complete Module 1 to 3.

The training is included in our programme each term and there is usually a choice of morning and evening sessions.

If you are unable to commit to the training at present, why not access the training programme workbook on Governornet that includes independent study activities.

GEL - E-learning for Governors

GEL is an online training website developed by Eastern Leadership Centre in partnership with the East of England Governors Partnership group. Brighton & Hove Governor Support has subscribed to the package on behalf of all governors in Brighton & Hove schools.

The training modules are designed to allow govenors to work at their own pace to improve skills and knowledge in key areas. They are not intended to replace face-to-face training but are a useful option for governors who have difficulty in attending events.
